raceface: Motorists and Cyclists Sharing the RoadA taste of cycling in New Zealand. Not for the faint hearted In New Zealand the biggest adrenalin rush you can find is alongside a New Zealander in a car. Please note I have been told by the local Police that there is no offence in putting the shits up a cyclist unless they actually hit you, so if you are thinking of a cycle tour, think long and hard, and if you are ready for an adrenalin rush with that distinctive Kiwi flavour get some good insurance and jump in To give you an idea of scale, at the start of the video the distance from the yellow line in the middle of the road to the white boundary line is 2.9 meters, taking into account the width of the lane, the width of my bicycle 0.7 meters and the Mitsubishi Canter the White truck about 2.0 meters you now have the same appreciation of the clearance and information as the Police were given. The last piece of road in the video is only 5.22 meters wide in total both lanesand is on the blind brow of a hill, with a 100KPH speed limit, take the width of two cars from that and my 700mm handle bars and you start to get an idea of the rush you are in for. The camera is a ContourHD 1080p and is mounted to the seat stay with a handlebar mount so the clearance looks more than it actully is and the wide angle lens also exaggerates the gap.
