“My Contour+2 never stays on the ground when I’m flying my racing airplane named Unleashed. It’s the only way to share my experiences from my point of view. The ground track data provided by the internal GPS allows for super accurate testing data to compare speed modifications. Integrating cockpit audio with the external mic feature is awesome too! I can ‘talk to the camera’ rather than take notes during my testing, making it super easy. It’s three devices in one!”

1RECOMMENDED CAMERA

The main reason to use the Contour+2 is the built-in GPS and external mic option.

When filming inside the cockpit the Contour +2 is the camera for you when up in the sky. GPS mode will allow you to track every sec of your flight showing you where you’ve been and how fast you were going, all while capturing it in HD quality on video. If your planning on attaching one to the outside of the plane its probably best to be safe and go with one of our water resistant Camera’s. The Roam 2 will fight off any elements that need to be while capturing the best view of your flight from right outside on the wing or body of the aircraft.

2BEING READY FOR THE SHOT/MOUNTS

Lets explain in detail some of the best ways to mount your Contour in an airplane.
This next section is to explain some ways in which you can use these mounts in a rewarding way and be ready yourself! With no prior experience!
PRIMARY MOUNT
PROFILE MOUNT
WHY?
The best mount for a high vibration environment.  Big engines and propellers generate a very high frequency vibration that makes recording difficult.  The solution is to use the most solid mount possible, the profile mount.  Keep in mind the rotating lens on the Contour allows any angle in the roll axis, this gives you many more options than you might think.  Preview your shot with the Contour Connect App and the Bluetooth in your camera before you stick the mount.  Then you can choose your pitch angle perfectly.  The handy laser allows you to quickly rotate the lens to the correct roll angle and you’re all set!

ROTATING SURFACE MOUNT
SUCTION CUP MOUNT
WHY?
Both of these mounts allow you to easily get multiple camera angles from a single mount. The more camera angles you can edit into your video, the better. You can shoot part of your flight with a camera pointed starboard, and then flip it over to port for a different view. The rotating surface mount works great for this. Obviously, every airplane has windows, so the suction cup mount is a clear solution (pun intended) to mount the camera with good visual appeal.

EXAMPLES
A
Using the profile mount on your flight helmet gives the best perspective video and a natural place to plug in your cockpit audio. For secondary shots, having a camera mounted on the dash with the rotating surface mount will allow you to easily reach up and turn it around to face the pilot and passengers. Choose the most solid surface possible, and avoid fabrics such as upholstered glare shields.

OTHER TIPS
Airplanes have a lot of electronics with navigation GPS antennas, XM weather antennas, communication and navigation radios, etc. To get the most accurate GPS data out of your Contour, give it a little space from these other antennas, otherwise you’ll notice large gaps in your GPS data due to interference. Also, if you’re performing aerobatics, don’t forget when you’re upside down that the Contour GPS antenna gets blocked. Give it a few seconds in level flight to pick up the GPS again before you perform your next maneuver.

AUDIO SETTINGS
One of the coolest features of the Contour+2 is the external mic option built in to the camera.  If you’ve been in an airplane without a headset on, you know the cockpit is a VERY noisy place.  Recording your intercom is easy with the Contour+2 while not recording unwanted background noise.

Settings:
Internal Mic Gain: 0
External Mic Gain: 30

VIDEO SETTINGS
The Contour+2 allows for many video options. Obviously, flying is a fast sport, so catching those details at high speed is important. High altitude flight looks best in 1080p, but if you’re low to the ground and the speed is high (as it often is), switching to 720p and 60 frames per second helps capture all those details quickly.

Settings:
High Altitude: 1080p 30 fps
Low Altitude:  720p  60 fps

3VIEWING YOUR MASTERPIECE/SOFTWARE

None of this is important if you can’t share your work.

HOW?
Plug in your USB to your Contour+2 and Storyteller loads automatically.  This gives you a great way to manage your videos, transfer them from the camera with the associated GPS data, and not get lost.  Viewing your flight from Storyteller allows you to see performance data as it happens in the video.  What a great tool!
